Description

Presented is an outstanding near-complete set 1955 Bowman baseball consisting of 317 different cards (out of 320 in the set). Missing the following three cards for completion: #168 Berra, 184 Mays, and 202 Mantle. This offering is highlighted by tons of Hall of Famers and stars from the era including Campanella, Reese, Banks, and Aaron. Includes both variations of #48 and 204. Sixty-one cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (56) and SGC (4). PSA Grading Composite: NM-MT 8 (10 cards): #15, 18, 20, 22 Campanella, 37 Reese (MC), 52, 143 Newcombe, 150, 190, and 238. NM 7 (25 cards): #11, 13, 23 Kaline, 30, 34, 42, 45, 49, 50, 51, 53, 62, 68 Howard RC, 77, 121, 122, 141, 142, 160, 177, 181, 194, 207, 208, and 221. EX-MT+ 6.5 (4 cards): #24, 60 Slaughter (SGC), 125, and 131. EX-MT 6 (13 cards): #5, 6, 10 Rizzuto (SGC 80), 33 Fox, 59 Ford, 97 (SGC), 103 Mathews, 119, 151, 164, 171 Roberts, 218, and 258. EX+ 5.5 (1 cards): #146. EX 5 (7 cards): #1 Wilhelm, 66, 179 Aaron (SGC), 242 Banks, 246, 256, and 263. The condition of the 259-card unencapsulated balance is 7% Nr/Mt, 19% Ex to Ex-Mt, 61% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 13% lesser (including ten that measure small). Unencapsulated Keys: #38 Wynn (95/5 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), 130 Ashburn (Gd+), 134 Feller (measures small, otherwise Ex), 158 Hodges (Vg-Ex), 191 Lemon (Ex), 197 Kiner (Vg), 265 Barlick (Vg-Ex), 283 Chylak (Fr), 303 Conlan (Ex+), and 315 Hubbard RC (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg+). The 1955 Bowman cards (Bowman's final baseball-card issue) have always been very popular due to their classic "television" style and inclusion of so many stars. The flush-to-the-border wood-grain design of this issue makes them very susceptible to corner and edge wear, and very difficult to assemble as a complete set in high grade. An exceptional mid- to high-grade near-complete set of this classic 1950s series. The equivalent SMR value for just sixty of the graded cards (not including the PSA-qualified card and factoring in the five half grades below NM+ at the lower whole-grade level) is $4,112. Total: 319 cards (near set of 317 plus two variations). The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
