Description

Bank check dated April 14, 1972, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente, less than one year before his death. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the check and graded the signature NM-MT 8. The check, drawn on the Banco Popular De Puerto Rico of Carolina, Puerto Rico, is made out to “Cash” in the amount of $4,000 and is signed “Roberto Clemente” in blue ink along the base. Clemente died on December 31, 1972, when the plane he was on, which was carrying relief supplies to Nicaraguan earthquake refugees, crashed over the Atlantic Ocean. The Baseball Hall of Fame immediately waived its normal five-year waiting period for Clemente, and he was inducted the following summer. The check (6.25 x 2.75 inches) has normal bank cancellation stamps (minimally affecting the signature) and a few light creases. Very Good to Excellent condition overall.
