Lot # 673: 1931 W517 Partial Set (37/54) Including Grover Alexander, Mel Ott, and Rogers Hornsby

Presented is a partial set of the 1931 W517 strip-card series consisting of thirty-seven different cards (out of fifty-four in a set). Missing the following seventeen cards for completion: #1 Combs, 2 Traynor, 3 Roush, 4 Ruth, 5, 12 Jackson, 20 Ruth, 21 Foxx, 31, 35 Gehrig, 37 Cochrane, 39 Grove, 46 J. Sewell, 47 Goslin, 50, 51 Averill, and 53. This partial set includes an impressive twenty-two Hall of Famers, highlighted by Rogers Hornsby, Grover Alexander, and Mel Ott. This issue was originally sold primarily in vertical strips of three, which were intended to be hand-cut by youngsters. Cards from this set are often found in somewhat rough condition (miscut, creases, back damage, etc.). Professional grading companies employ different standards for hand-cut cards, such as these strip-card W517s, with respect to size and neatness of cut, so the listed grades are without reference to any cutting issues (it is possible that some of these cards would only be graded "Authentic" if submitted, but most [if not all] would be numerically graded). Condition is 18% Vg-Ex to Ex (mostly Vg-Ex), 36% Gd to Vg, and 46% Pr to Fr.
