Description

Presented is a rarely offered near-complete set of 1953 Dixie Lids consisting of eighteen different lids (out of twenty-four in the set) plus two duplicates. Missing the following six lids for completion: Ashburn, Irvin, Kiner, Schoendienst, Slaughter, and Spahn. Dixie Lids are one of the most fascinating of all food issues in that they were designed as tops for the company's line of ice-cream products and featured well-known sports and movie stars on the inside as a further enticement to young consumers. Originally created in the 1930s, the idea was revived in the early 1950s. 1953 Dixie lids can be found in two different sizes, with this collection offering the following quantities of each: fourteen "small" (2-1/4 inches in diameter) and six "large" (2-11/16 inches). The two duplicates (Gordon/Braves and Trucks) include one of each size variation. The tab is missing on eleven of the lids, otherwise ranging in appearance from Vg to Ex (averaging Vg-Ex). The condition of the nine lids with tabs is Ex-Mt, Ex, Vg-Ex, three Vg, Gd, and two Pr. Keys: Fox (tab cut off, otherwise Ex), Kluszewski (Pr due to paper loss on reverse, large), Lemon (Vg), and Shantz (with protective coating, Ex-Mt, large). Very presentable medium- to lower-grade near-complete set of this very unusual and popular issue. Total: 20 lids (partial set of 18 plus two size variations).
