Lot # 2163: 1985-1997 Perez-Steele Great Moments Postcards Set (69 Signed Cards) Including Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams

One of the most beautiful sets ever issued, the publication of Perez-Steele's "Great Moments" set began in 1985. The offering was limited to 5,000 numbered sets with periodical updates. The set is fashioned after the colorful T-3 Turkey Red cabinet cards of 1911 and salutes the defining moments in the careers of Baseball Hall of Famers. There are 108 cards in the complete set, issued as nine 12-card series. The offered collection is complete with all 108 issued cards; however, it has been assembled from cards of variously numbered sets (i.e., 3244/5,000, 2420/5,000, 3419/5,000, etc.). Of the 108 cards, only 70 could have possibly been signed (the other 38 cards depict players who died prior to the set's issue). This set includes 69 signed cards which feature 71 total autographs as #87 is signed by Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and Duke Snider. Although 69 signed cards are present, this collection is still missing two signed examples for completion (68 Sewell and 98 Ashburn) because #12 Cobb was signed by Pete Rose. The signed cards are as follows: Kaline, Ford (HOF '74), Campanella, Aaron, Musial (HOF 1969), Cobb (signed by Pete Rose), T. Williams, Spahn, Koufax, Roberts, Mantle, Banks, McCovey, Mize, Reese, Irvin, Mathews, Slaughter, Gehringer, Snider, Dandridge, Hubbell, Doerr, Dickey, Stargell, B. Robinson, Herman, Aparicio, Gomez, Killebrew, Bench, Bell, Berra, Schoendienst, Marichal, Leonard, Kell, Hunter, Boudreau, Lopez, Mays, Brock, Lemon, B. Williams, Ferrell, Yastrzemski, Seaver, Fingers, Kiner, Carew, Perry, Newhouser, Wynn, Feller, Palmer, Barlick, Mantle/Mays/Snider (signed by all three), Morgan, Reese (on the Reese & Robinson card #91), Jenkins, F. Robinson, Wilhelm, Bunning, Carlton, Schmidt, R. Jackson, Niekro, Rizzuto, and Weaver. All of the signatures have been boldly scripted in either blue or black Sharpie on the front. The cards are presented in three "Perez 'Great Moments' Steele" leather binders and range in condition from Ex to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Ex/Mt), with a few lesser. Total: 108 cards (69 signed).
