Lot # 538: 1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements Near-Complete Set (87/100) with 20+ Hall of Famers Including Joss, Plank, and Speaker

Presented is a rarely offered 1909-1913 M101-2 Sporting News Supplements near-complete set, consisting of 87 different players (out of 100 in the set). This sepia-toned premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. Their method of issue and the thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. All except eight supplements, noted below, are affixed (double-sided) into a period “The Nonpareil” scrapbook. The oversized 8x10 supplements are neatly glued at the corners to the pitch-black pages of the 10x12-inch cloth-covered volume. Despite storage wear, creasing, fraying, and (in some cases) detached corner tips, the supplements have largely maintained a very presentable appearance. While multiple pages are loose and partially separated, the overall construction of the scrapbook is still intact. A selection of reverses are visible and each displays a previous owner’s stamp.
