Presented is a partial set of 1888 N78 Duke "Histories of Generals" consisting of twenty-six different booklets (out of fifty in a set). Missing the following twenty-four booklets for completion: Beauregard, Bragg, Breckinridge, Early, Ewell, Forrest, Gordon, Hampton, Hardee, Hill, Hood, Jackson, A. Johnston, J. Johnston, Longstreet, Magruder, Morgan, Pemberton, Pickett, Polk, Price, Semmes, Smith, and Stuart. This is a very presentable group of these very unusual sixteen-page booklets with colorful covers, issued as tobacco premiums. Condition ranges from Pr to Ex (averaging Gd-Vg), with one (Gen. U.S. Grant) showing a tape repair. The McClellan example resides in a scratched GAI holder. Issued with Duke's Cigarettes, the set is entitled "Histories of Generals." Each booklet is the size of an insert card (2.75 x 1.5 inches) and features a portrait image of a U.S. General on the front with a biography presented on the interior pages. The back cover of each features a beautiful colorful lithograph of a battle scene or soldier-in-action image. Duke's "Histories of Generals" are highly prized by Civil War collectors, miniature book collectors, and nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 26 booklets.
