Description

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Very attractive example of this extremely rare #80 error card featuring Hall of Famer Lefty Grove on the front and Pepper Martin's biography on the back from the 1960 Fleer set. In 1960, Fleer would have preferred to put out a set featuring current stars, but was unable to do so due to Topps' ironclad contracts with all the modern players (except Ted Williams). Fleer came up with the idea for this old-timer set to keep its foot in the trading-card game. Originally designed to be an 80-card set, Fleer had to cancel the idea of having Pepper Martin as the last card in the set because of contract disputes, and supposedly card #80 was never issued, until several error cards surfaced over the years. Fleer replaced Martin's image on the front of the sheet with three different Hall of Famers but the back remained with his biography. This extremely rare printing-error card is very well known as one of the most famous of all 1960s error cards! The offered card displays vibrant colors, a crisp image, and honest corner wear. The important reverse is clean and boldly printed. This is a high-quality example of this true postwar rarity, a worthy addition to any 1960 Fleer master set or error card collection.
