Lot # 1458: 1960 Fleer All-Time Greats Complete Set (79) Including 43 PSA-Graded Cards Plus Wagner and Cobb Wrong Backs

Presented is a very attractive and mostly high-grade complete 79-cad set of 1960 Fleer All-Time Greats. This is an extremely substantial and significant set issued by Fleer, as it battled as best it could to be a part of the baseball-card market in a world in which Topps had exclusive contracts with virtually all modern stars. Ted Williams was the one current star under contract with Fleer, and he appears in the 1960 set (on the heels of the marketing of the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams set) as an added draw for kids. This set introduced baseball history to many youngsters, and is a favorite with vintage-card collectors to this day. Forty-three cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. PSA Grading Composite: MINT 9 (2 cards): #15 and 50 Chance (OC). NM-MT+ 8.5 (1 card): #19. NM-MT 8 (22 cards): #2 Mathewson, 13, 20, 26, 28 Gehrig, 30, 31, 34, 39, 40, 41, 44, 46, 48, 53, 58 Gehringer, 62 Wagner, 68, 69, 70, 73, and 78. NM 7 (14 cards): #3 Ruth, 4, 7, 8, 10, 18, 38, 42 Cobb, 43, 56, 57, 60, 65, and 67. EX-MT 6 (4 cards): #6, 63, 72 Williams, and 74. The condition of the 36-card unencapsulated balance is 25% Nr/Mt or better and 75% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a couple slightly lesser and ten with a slight trim). Also included are the following two wrong-back error cards: #42 Miller front/Cobb back (Vg+) and 62 Marion front/Wagner back (Ex due to centering). This early Fleer set is among the most interesting and overlooked sets of the era. This is an extremely attractive offering of this popular set! The SMR value for just forty-two of the graded cards (not including the PSA-qualified card and factoring in the half grade at the lower whole-grade level) is $2,204.
