Ticket stub issued for Game 1 of the 1929 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Athletics at Wrigley Field. A' manager Connie Mack shocked the baseball world by starting 35-year-old pitcher Howard Ehmke in Game 1 of the 1929 World Series. In doing so, he passed over both of his 20-game winners, George Earnshaw and Lefty Grove, in favor of a pitcher who had only appeared in 11 games all season. There was method in Mack’s madness, however, as he knew that Ehmke’s variety of different right-handed deliveries would cause problems for the predominantly right-handed hitting lineup of the Cubs. Ehmke rewarded Mack’s confidence in him by striking out a then-record 13 batters in his complete-game 3-1 win over the Cubs. It was the last win of Ehmke’s career. The ticket stub (2.25 x 4.25 inches) is in Good to Very Good condition overall.
