Description

Graded GOOD 2 by SGC. Presented is a modestly graded example of Joe Jackson's classic 1916 M101-4 Sporting News card. This is one of Jackson's most desirable cards and it is very rarely offered! The Sporting News advertisement appears on the reverse. Though this card was issued with a blank reverse or with one of many different regional advertisements, the M101-4 set has always been referred to as issued by The Sporting News in honor of its most prominent sponsor. This example boasts outstanding image clarity, honest corner wear, and a heavy crease extending across the center. The important advertising reverse is boldly printed. Despite playing for 13 years before his banishment, very few cards of Joe Jackson were issued during his playing days. He was not a regular in 1910 and was not included in the tobacco issues of that time. He was banned from baseball following the 1920 season, so he did not make it into the popular American Caramel and related issues of 1921. Besides a few strip-card issues, there are just not many cards that feature Jackson with his infamous team, the White Sox. The Sporting News and associated sets are by far the most popular of all his White Sox cards as they picture him in a classic Conlon batting pose. This is, in fact, the same picture that is used for his Cracker Jack card. Despite the obvious condition flaws, this is a striking example of one of the most significant and highly prized of all Joe Jackson baseball cards.
