Lot # 1572: 1958 Hires Root Beer Complete Set (66)

Complete set of 66 different 1958 Hires Root Beer cards, all with tabs detached. This issue was designed to be released one card per six-pack of Hires Root Beer. The cards were produced with tabs at the bottom advertising membership in the Hires Baseball Club and a copy of the book How To Play Baseball. The tabs were intended to be removed from the card and sent to Hires along with two bottle caps and 10 cents to take advantage of the advertised offer. The cards vary in size, up to 1/4-inch each way, as is common for this issue. Condition of the set is 32% Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 42% Ex to Ex-Mt, and 26% Vg to Vg-Ex. Included are 45 detached tabs, all unmarked and grading slightly lesser overall than the set. We have selected four cards for grading and encapsulation by SGC. Keys: #10 Ashburn (Vg-Ex+), 17 Doby (NM 7), 23 Reese (Ex+), 25 Mays (EX/NM 6), 36 Mazeroski (Ex-Mt), 44 Aaron (EX+ 5.5), 55 Drysdale (Ex), and 61 Snider (VG/EX+ 4.5). A very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set (without tabs) of this popular, scarce, and very unusual regional issue. Total: 66 cards.
