Description

Presented is a partial set of the classic 1948 Leaf football gum-card issue consisting of 73 different cards (out of 98 in the set). The first 49 cards (#1-49) represent the first series, and the scarcer second series of 49 cards is represented by the high-number cards (#50 thru 98). These are the first color football cards of the post-World War II era. Condition is 25% Ex or slightly better, 65% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 10% lesser (including a couple that measure a bit small). We have selected seven cards for grading and encapsulation by SGC. Keys: #3 Turner RC (VG/EX 4), 4 Walker RC (VG/EX+ 4.5), 6 Layne (VG 3), 13 Lujack/name correct RC (Vg+), 15 Justice RC (Vg-Ex+), 16 Pihos RC (EX 5), 19 McAfee RC (Vg-Ex+), 22 Van Buren RC (VG/EX+ 4.5), 29 Trippi RC (Vg), 34 Baugh RC (VG/EX 4), 36 Dudley RC (Vg), 37 Connor RC (90/10 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), and 53 Conerly RC (EX 5). Missing the following 25 cards for completion: #1 Luckman, 26 Waterfield, 46, 47, 51, 52 Nomellini, 54 Bednarik, 56, 64, 67, 68, 70, 72, 73 Jensen, 75, 76, 77, 79, 80, 82, 84, 88, 90, 91 Hart, and 98 DiMarco. Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors. This is a very attractive mid-grade partial set of 1948 Leaf Football, one of card collecting's most popular classics. Total: 73 cards.
