Lot # 2765: 1948 Leaf Football Partial Set (70/98)

Presented is a partial set of 1948 Leaf football consisting of 70 different cards, out of 98 in the set. This offering includes twenty-six of the forty-nine scarcer second series cards (#50 thru 98). These are the first color football cards of the post-World War II era. Condition is 25% Gd to Vg and 75% Pr to Fr (all twenty-six second series cards are in Poor condition, with some displaying significant paper loss on the fronts). Three cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Luckman RC (Pr), 3 Turner RC (Fr), 4 Walker RC (Pr), 6 Layne (Fr), 13 Lujack RC (Pr-Fr due to heavy stain), 15 Justice RC (Pr), 16 Pihos RC (Fr), 19 McAfee RC (Fr), 26 Waterfield RC (Fr), 29 Trippi RC (Pr-Fr), 36 Dudley RC (10/90 L/R, otherwise Vg), and 37 Connor RC (Pr). Three SGC-graded cards: #50 (Authentic), 78 (FAIR 1.5), and 87 (GOOD 2). Missing the following twenty-eight cards for completion: #22 Van Buren, 24, 25, 34 Baugh, 43, 52 Nomellini, 53 Conerly, 54 Bednarik, 57, 58, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 72, 73 Jensen, 74, 75, 76, 81, 84, 88, 89, 91 Hart, 93, and 98 DiMarco. Just as the cards in the 1948-1949 Leaf baseball series are much rarer than Bowman and Topps cards from the late 1940s and early 1950s, Leaf football cards are also rarer than most other postwar football issues. They are also very distinctive, with an unusual and very colorful design that has always made these a favorite with collectors.
