Description

Offered is a partial set of 72 different cards (out of 108) from the 1948 Bowman series, the first football-card set issued by Bowman Gum. Condition is 25% Ex to Ex-Mt (including a few Nr/Mt), 56% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 19% lesser. Seven cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Tereshinski RC (Gd), 17 Trippi RC (Vg+), 34 (VG-EX 4), 47 (VG 3), 57 (VG 3), 80 Dudley RC (GOOD 2), 81 (VG 3), 83 (VG 3), and 108 Ray RC (VG 3). Missing the following thirty-six cards for completion: #3 Lujack, 6, 7 Van Buren, 8, 9, 11, 12 Conerly, 15, 18, 21, 22 Baugh, 24, 26 Waterfield, 27, 30, 33, 36 Turner, 39, 42, 45, 48, 58, 60, 61 Wojciechowicz, 63 Pihos, 72, 75, 78, 87, 90, 96, 99 Gilmer, 102, 104, 105, and 107 Luckman. Its football cards never caught on quite like its baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set will always be the first football venture, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. Total: 72 cards.
