Graded VG 40 by SGC. This is the ONLY example that has ever been graded by SGC (or PSA)! Exceedingly rare sample card of St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby from one of the rarest of all āEā card sets, catalogued E123, issued in 1923 by the Curtis Ireland Candy Company of St. Louis, MO. Identical in design to the V100 Willard Chocolate series, E123s measure 3-1/4 x 2-1/16 inches. The fronts feature a sepia-toned photo with the player's name in script. The elaborate advertisement on the back presents extensive text with details regarding a contest requiring collectors to mail in the cards in exchange for prizes, which is likely responsible in part for their great rarity. The offered example is boldly printed and displays honest wear to the corners. Light creasing accounts for the assigned grade. The reverse advertisement is bold and crisp. This is an ideal Hall of Fame sample card from this extremely rare set.
