Description

Graded VG 3 by PSA (submitted by REA). Tremendous mid-grade example of Detroit Tigers Hall of Famer Sam Crawford from the 1916 M101-5 set featuring a Famous and Barr advertising reverse. The 1916 Famous and Barr set is identical in design to M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News, but with advertising on the reverse for the "The Boys’ Clothes Store of St. Louis - Famous and Barr Co. – St. Louis Foremost Boys’ Clothes Store." The St. Louis-based Famous and Barr Company was one of several regional advertisers to issue both the M101-4 and M101-5 series cards, and almost all Famous and Barr examples known are M101-5s. The significant rarity of this card is confirmed by the fact that only seven Famous and Barr Sam Crawford cards (including this one) have ever been graded by PSA (with an additional four graded by SGC)! The offered card is bright and crisp with even corner wear. The important advertising reverse is boldly printed and clean. This is a very attractive mid-grade example of this rare advertising reverse, featuring a desirable Hall of Fame subject, which would be a worthy addition to any world-class M101-5, Sam Crawford, or type-card collection.
