Lot # 643: Newly Discovered 1916 Holmes to Homes Bread #86 Joe Jackson PSA POOR 1 - The Only PSA-Graded Example!

Presented is an outstanding, newly discovered example of Black Sox star Joe Jackson (#86) from the M101-5 series featuring an extremely scarce Holmes to Homes advertising reverse. This is the ONLY example ever graded (at any level) by PSA! The M101-5 (and the closely related M101-4) set is commonly referred to as Sporting News (in honor of its most prominent sponsor), but cards were actually issued with a variety of advertising backs as well as with blank backs. The Holmes to Homes reverse is among the scarcest of the various advertisers found on M101-5 cards. While exact population numbers cannot be known, in their extensive research into the M101-4/5 sets and their advertising backs (http://www.oldcardboard.com/m/m101-4/m101pop.asp), hobby scholars Tim Newcomb and Todd Schultz estimate that Holmes to Homes cards are among the most difficult to find (along with Everybody's, Green-Joyce, and Altoona Tribune) and account for less than 2 percent of the entire M101-4/5 production run of all back varieties (Holmes to Homes has been confirmed to appear only on M101-5 cards). The card features Joe Jackson in a classic batting-pose photograph by Charles Conlon, which is the same photograph used to produce his Cracker Jack card. The card is well-centered and features a bold and crisp image. The reverse advertisement for Holmes to Homes is boldly printed in black. Graded POOR 1 by PSA due to creasing and evidence of album removal on the reverse. Despite the modest technical grade, the card retains tremendous visual appeal! This is a remarkable example worthy of the finest Joe Jackson or rare vintage baseball-card collection.
