Lot # 3140: Ellsworth Vines Personal 1900s Slazenger Doherty Model Tennis Racket - Gifted From His Father - From the Ellsworth Vines Estate

Offered is a 1900s Slazenger Doherty model tennis racket from the estate of tennis great Ellsworth Vines. According to our consignor, Vines received the racket from his father, who brought it home from a business trip when Vines was three years old (circa 1914). His father taught Vines the fundamentals and how to keep score. The Slazenger Doherty is a classic wooden tennis racket named after the famous British brothers Reginald and Laurence Doherty, who together won a combined nine Wimbledon singles titles. First produced around the turn of the 20th century, the model quickly became a favorite of professionals. The racket is engraved "Slazenger/New York/English Model" on one side of the upper handle and features a patent number on the other side. "Doherty/Slazenger/Patent/Stringing" appears in gold lettering just below the strings. The racket (27 inches long) has its strings largely intact and is in Good to Very Good condition overall.
