This is a remarkably high grade for a Ernie Davis rookie card: Out of 1,337 examples evaluated to date by PSA and SGC combined, only three have ever been graded higher (all PSA)! Davis was the 1961 Heisman Trophy winner and the first pick of the 1962 NFL draft. Tragically, he passed away after a bout of leukemia without ever playing a professional game. The 1962 Topps football set is particularly difficult to collect in high grade, as the black flush-to-the-border design of the set makes them particularly susceptible to corner and edge wear. The offered card displays brilliant colors, a crisp image, and strong corners. The condition-sensitive black borders display virtually no chipping. Clean reverse. It is rare to find any 1962 Topps football card in such high grade, but it is especially rare to find such a high-quality example of a key rookie card like the offered Ernie Davis, which would be worthy of any world-class 1962 Topps football set.
