Lot # 2108: 1920 Eddie Plank Endorsed Check PSA/DNA NM-MT 8

Bank check, dated December 16, 1920, endorsed on the reverse in pencil by Hall of Fame pitcher Eddie Plank. PSA/DNA has encapsulated the check and graded the signature NM-MT 8. Eddie Plank's signature is one of the most elusive of all prewar Hall of Famers because he died in 1926 at the age of 51. This is just the third example we have offered in the past 21 years and the only Plank signature on a check we have ever seen. The bank check, drawn on The Pacific Bank of New York, is made out to "Edward S. Plank" in the amount of $246.73. It has been signed in red ink along the base, but the name of the issuer is not legible due to a large portion having been clipped off in the lower right. Eddie Plank was one of the greatest pitchers of his era and the ace of Connie Mack's staff between the years 1901 and 1914. During that period, Plank won 20 or more games seven times and helped lead the A's to five pennants and three World Championships. One of only 23 pitchers in history to win 300 or more games, Plank's lifetime total of 326 wins ranks thirteenth best all time and third best for left handers. The check (8.5 x 3.25 inches), which has been laminated, displays a single bank cancellation hole in the lower-right corner and a few bank cancellation stamps on the reverse. Without reference to the cut corner, the check is in Excellent condition overall.
