If the images upon this large-format photographic display look familiar to collectors it is with good reason. The photos used are the very same images that appear on N173 Old Judge cabinet cards issued in 1888. In the early days of the organized hobby, collectors often misidentified these displays as uncut sheets of N173 Old Judges. In fact, they are produced by a very different means: The images are printed directly onto the displays as opposed to being original photographs mounted. They are very old but do not date from the 1880s. We believe that these "N173 Displays" actually date from 1926 and were made as decorative pieces for display at the 50th anniversary celebration of the National League. The offered piece features an affixed caption "Philadelphia Athletics in the 1880s'" along the base. The seven identified player images are those of George Wood, Ed Andrews, Cupid Childs, Arthur Irwin, Deacon McGuire, Joe Mulvey, Jim Tyng, and Sid Farrar. The piece (27.5 x 18.5 inches), which is produced on heavy cardboard stock, displays moderate toning along the borders and creasing in the bottom left. In Very Good condition overall. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
