Lot # 492: 1913-1915 "Pinkerton" Postcard #251 Christy Mathewson SGC VG 40

Graded VG 40 by SGC. Rare and striking example of #251 Christy Mathewson from the 1913-1915 Pinkerton Postcard series. This series is closely related to the T5 Pinkerton Cabinet issue and features the same image including caption design (in 3.5 x 5.5-inch postcard size) as appear on the T5 cabinets. Multiple styles are known to exist for these postcards, including scorecard-back examples, which allowed the holder to fill in a lineup and score a game on the reverse of a player postcard. The offered example is a blank-back variety. Featuring a sepia photo of the Hall of Fame pitcher in a wind-up pose, this card is crisp and clean with an outstanding image and minor corner wear. The blank reverse displays a light discoloration and excess ink. An ideal example featuring key Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson from this rare 1910-era issue.
