Description

Original photo of Jackie Robinson, taken by noted sports photographer Barney Stein circa 1951, with the image attributed to the artwork used on Robinson's 1953 Topps card #1. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I photograph by PSA/DNA. A credit stamp on the reverse reads "Notice - This picture is not to be used directly or indirectly with commercial advertising or indorsement [sic]. Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, Inc." Robinson's full name, written in pencil and ink, also appears on the reverse, along with a number of editorial notations and a date stamp ("Mar 1955"). Barney Stein, who worked for the New York Post from 1939 to 1970, was also the official photographer of the Brooklyn Dodgers for over twenty years. Photos used in the production of trading cards, especially those featuring prominent Hall of Famers such as Robinson, have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is one of only a small number of vintage photos we have seen featuring a player image attributed to the 1953 set. The photo (8 x 10 inches) displays light-to-moderate creasing, a small edge chip on the left side, a pinhole on the upper left corner and a piece of tape affixed to the back. Technically in Fair condition but with a far superior appearance. This is an iconic image of Robinson and one that should appeal equally to photo, Brooklyn Dodgers, and baseball-card collectors.
