Very attractive near-complete set of 27 different 1948 Hall of Fame Exhibits (out of 33 in the set). Missing the following six exhibits for completion: Alexander, Cochrane, Collins, Ruth/standing with bats, Sisler, and Walsh. These unnumbered black-and-white (in some cases green-tint) Exhibit cards feature all-time great Hall of Famers, and no doubt instilled a great appreciation of baseball history in youngsters of the day. This collection consists of 18 green-tint versions and nine black-and-white. The 1948 Hall of Fame Exhibit cards were issued on cardboard stock and each card has the player's brief biography printed along the bottom. The set is naturally highlighted by many of the great legends of the game, including Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Rogers Hornsby, Walter Johnson, Babe Ruth (two different poses, with the batting pose included here), Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, and Cy Young. Twenty-four cards from this set were reproduced in 1974 and the reproductions (which are printed in various colors) sometimes cause confusion. Condition is 37% Vg-Ex to Ex (including one Ex-Mt), 37% Gd to Vg, and 26% lesser. Eight cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: Cobb (GOOD 2), Gehrig (POOR 1), Hornsby (POOR 1), Johnson (GOOD 2), Mathewson (POOR 1), Ruth/batting (GOOD 2 [MK]), Wagner (FAIR 1.5), and Young (GOOD 2). This is a very presentable medium- to lower-grade near-complete set of this classic and often overlooked Exhibit Supply Company issue. Total: 27 cards.
