Lot # 1092: 1949 Lummis Peanut Butter Phillies Robin Roberts PSA GOOD 2

Graded GOOD 2 by PSA. Of all the regional food issues of the late 1940s, Lummis Peanut Butter cards are among the rarest and most desirable. Issued in 1949 in the Philadelphia area by Lummis & Co., the 12-card set includes only Phillies players. The Lummis Peanut Butter cards are so rare that even in Philadelphia, where the cards were issued and home to many of the most celebrated card conventions in the early days of organized collecting, virtually no cards from this set were ever seen. Lummis Peanut Butter Phillies cards were catalogued, and advanced collectors spoke of them, but trying to find even one was an incredibly tough task. Interestingly, both the 12-card Lummis Peanut Butter set and the Sealtest set used the same images (although Sealtest cards were produced with peel-off sticker backs). To date, PSA and SGC have combined to grade only 37 cards (in total) from this incredibly rare set. The Lummis Peanut Butter card offered here is Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts. This is just the third Roberts ever graded (SGC has not graded a single example). The card (3.5 x 4.25 inches) displays a crisp image, light corner wear, and minor staining on back. The advertisement on the reverse is boldly printed. Very pleasing Hall of Famer example of this exceptionally rare postwar food issue, which advanced collectors recognize as among the rarest of all regional card issues.
