Description

Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Outstanding mid-grade example of the #3 card of Babe Ruth from the 1928 George Ruth Candy Co. series. The 1928 Babe Ruth Candy cards are particularly well known to collectors, but in our opinion, this set is without question one of the most overlooked, underappreciated, and undervalued of all Babe Ruth cards and all vintage-card sets. The set was issued in two print runs, one on high-quality white stock and another on a cheaper tan stock (ie this card). The tan stock version has also apparently been reprinted in the past, and this contributes to the confusion and desire by many collectors to simply steer clear of this set. The similarity to the Fro Joy Ice Cream Babe Ruth set of six, which has also been extensively reprinted, and which has muted demand as a direct result of these reproductions, is yet another factor that has played a role in these cards not getting the attention and respect they deserve. The offered example displays a crisp image and even corner wear. The clean reverse bears the printed offer from the Babe Ruth Candy Co. of Cleveland, which offers a signed Babe Ruth baseball in exchange for a complete set of six cards. This is a strong mid-grade example of Babe Ruth from this unusual and undervalued candy-card set.
