Description

Presented is a partial set of R157 "Uncle Sam" consisting of forty-four different cards (out of 96 in the set) plus two R158 "Uncle Sam's Home Defense" trading cards. Each card has been professionally graded and encapsulated by SGC. These cards, issued by Gum, Inc., in 1941, feature military men in various scenes of battle and training as well as depicting the civilian efforts on the home front of a nation newly entered into a second World War. Their outstanding color, detailed artwork, historically significant subject matter, and the exciting narratives presented on the backs, all contribute to making this set (though catalogued as two separate sets, they are really one set, and they are numbered continuously) one of nonsport collecting's all-time classics. The R157 set is complete at ninety-six cards (present are forty-four), while the R158 set is an extension of the R157 series (present are two low-number R158 cards). SGC Grading Composite: EX 60 (12 cards): #7, 15, 26, 47, 51, 53, 54, 56, 74, 87, 92, and 93. VG/EX+ 55 (9 cards): #12, 22, 23, 24, 55, 73, 77, 81, and 102 (R158). VG/EX 50 (2 cards): #18 and 70. VG+ 45 (1 card): #60. VG 40 (8 cards): #13, 16, 25, 48, 49, 63, 83, and 91. GOOD+ 35 (2 cards): #85 and 90. GOOD 30 (4 cards): #5, 38, 66, and 72. FAIR 20 (4 cards): #17, 79, 95, and 96. POOR 10 (3 cards): #36, 46, and 115 (R158). Authentic (1 card): #94. Offered is an extremely attractive partial set with far better eye-appeal than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades. Compared to baseball cards of the same era, these early nonsport cards, which are at least as scarce, represent a particularly outstanding value. Total: 46 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
