Description

Presented is an outstanding near-complete set (270 of 274 cards) of 1953 Topps, one of the most significant of all postwar baseball card issues. Missing the following four cards for completion: #1 Robinson, 82 Mantle, 220 Paige, and 244 Mays (all offered as individual lots in this auction). Includes a signed example of #273 Harvey Haddix. Condition is 17% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (including a few Nr/Mt-Mt), 51% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 32% Gd to Vg (including a few lesser and one with a slight miscut). Overall, the high numbers (#221-280) grade a bit lower than the low numbers. We have selected six cards for grading and encapsulation by SGC. Keys: #10 Burgess SP (Ex-Mt), 27 Campanella (5/95 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), 37 Mathews (NM+ 7.5), 41 Slaughter (NM 7), 43 McDougald SP (Vg), 54 Feller (Ex), 61 Wynn SP (Vg-Ex+), 62 Irvin (Vg+), 76 Reese (Vg-Ex), 77 Mize (NM+ 7.5), 78 Schoendienst (Ex), 81 Black SP (Fr-Gd), 86 Martin SP (20/80 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 87 Lopat SP (Ex), 104 Berra (Gd), 114 Rizzuto (Vg), 119 Sain SP (Vg-Ex+), 138 Kell (Vg-Ex+), 147 Spahn (Gd), 149 D. DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), 151 Wilhelm SP (NM 7), 162 Kluszewski SP (Vg-Ex), 191 Kiner (NM 7), 207 Ford (Vg), 228 Newhouser (Gd), 246 Face RC (Ex), 254 Roe (Ex), 258 Gilliam RC (EX/NM 6), 263 Podres RC SP (5/95 L/R, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 264 Woodling (Vg), 265 Jensen SP (Vg), 273 Haddix RC SP (signed, otherwise Fr due to adhesive residue on the reverse), and 280 Bolling RC SP (Vg+). This is a very attractive mid- to high-grade near-complete set (minus four) of one of card collecting's most popular issues. Total: 270 cards. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
