Pittsburgh Pirates team supplement from the M101-2 Sporting News series featuring Hall of Famers Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, and Vic Willis. This sepia-tone premium set was issued with the Sporting News between the years 1909 and 1913. Each premium was issued on only a single day and is dated in the upper right or left. (In the case of the offered premium, it is November 11, 1909.) Their method of issue and thin paper stock on which they are printed make these unusual and striking premiums particularly susceptible to damage. While most of the supplements feature single players, a number of teams made appearances in the set on larger, fold-over examples. The 1909 Pirates are significant as they won the National League and went on to win the World Series over the Detroit Tigers. A total of 25 team members and their trainer are depicted on the offered premium, which measures 15.75 x 10.25 inches. A vertical fold line is present in the center, as intended, and there are minor flaws around the edges and at the corners, including chipping and light creases. The item has been affixed to a larger scrapbook page (21.5 x 14 inches), together with a number of other newspaper photos and clippings on both sides of the sheet. An outstanding piece commemorating this important team, highlighted by three Hall of Famers. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
