Presented is a rarely offered partial set of 104 different cards (of the 200 in the set) from the E135 Collins-McCarthy series, highlighted by Hall of Famers Dave Bancroft and Urban Faber. Issued in 1917 by the Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. of San Francisco, the 200-card black-and-white E135 set was the company's only venture into issuing cards of Major Leaguers. Unlike the somewhat similar 1916 M101-4/5 Sporting News set, these cards were never issued as complete sets to the public, and so are naturally much rarer. They were also larger than M101-4/5 cards. The E135 set was produced on a slightly thinner stock that is far more susceptible to wear and has a very glossy surface, which is very prone to creasing. The set is commonly referred to as issued by Collins-McCarthy, but, as most collectors know, several different companies actually issued the set. Cards were printed with advertising for regional issuers as well. All of the cards in this collection have Collins-McCarthy backs. Condition of the set is 14% Vg or slightly better, 41% Gd, and 45% Pr to Fr. Eighteen cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (one is SGC). Keys: #5 (GOOD 2), 7 (GOOD 2), 12 Bancroft (Pr), 13 (FAIR 1.5), 46 Faber (PSA Authentic/Altered), 57 (POOR 1), 69 (FAIR 1.5), 72 Hendrix (GOOD+ 2.5), 75 (POOR 1 [MC]), 88 (GOOD 2), 97 (POOR 1), 103 (POOR 1), 104 (FAIR 1.5), 109 Marsans (GOOD 2), 110 Mayer (VG 3), 116 (POOR 1), 124 Myers (SGC VG 40), 131 Peckinpaugh (POOR 1), and 199 (FAIR 1.5). Missing the following 96 cards for completion: #2 Alexander, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 Baker, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 22, 24, 25 Carey, 26, 27, 28 Cicotte, 29, 30 Cobb, 31 Collins, 34, 36 Crawford, 39, 42, 43, 44, 45 Evers, 47 Felsch, 50, 51, 52, 53, 55 Gandil, 60, 61, 63, 66, 71 Heilmann, 76, 77, 79 Hooper, 80 Hornsby, 81, 82 Jackson, 86 Jennings, 87 Johnson, 92, 93, 94, 100, 101, 102, 105, 107 Maranville, 108 Marquard, 113 McGraw, 114, 115, 117, 118, 120, 121, 125, 126, 127, 132, 136, 137 Rice, 139 Rixey, 142 Roush, 146, 147 Ruth, 148, 149, 150 Schalk, 153, 160, 162 Sisler, 166 Speaker, 168 Stengel, 171, 172, 173, 177, 178, 179, 180 Wagner, 182, 183, 185 Weaver, 187 Wheat, 190 Williams, 194, 195, 197, and 200. It is very rare to find this legendary issue offered as a partial set, or even as a significant collection. This is a remarkable offering and a very presentable partial set that presents better than suggested by its modest technical grades. Total: 104 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
