One-page typewritten letter dated June 5, 1945, and signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker. In his letter, written on his personal letterhead, Speaker responds to a fan about how he was able to make the Major Leagues: In full: Dear Howard: In reply to your letter in which you asked that I tell you how I made the Major Leagues, I wish to advise you that I made the majors by constant practice and study of the game, and at the same time not neglecting school or other duties. For your information, the only thing that I can suggest to any young person who wants to make baseball his profession is to put in a lot of hard work and study on the game and as much practice as is possible without neglecting his school or other duties. I hope that this will be beneficial to you. Under a separate cover I am sending you a copy of "Famous Sluggers" yearbook which carries some very fine articles on batting and other positions in the ball club. With best wishes, I remain/Sincerely yours, Tris Speaker {signed}. Speaker's signature is boldly executed in blue ink. The letter (7.25 x 10.25 inches) has a horizontal and two vertical mailing folds but is otherwise in Excellent condition overall. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
