Receipt from the St. Louis Souvenir, dated March 29, 1928, signed by pitcher Urban Shocker. This signed receipt, along with several other items offered in this auction, originates directly from Urban Shocker's estate and is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from his great-grandson. The signature of Urban Shocker, who was a key member of the 1927 New York Yankees (not to mention one of the top pitchers of his era), is exceedingly rare due to his untimely death in 1928 at the age of 37. Shocker is without question one of the rarest 1927 Yankees signatures. Not including team balls, we would be surprised if more than a dozen Shocker signatures are known today. This is just the sixth Shocker signature we have offered, in any form. The fact that it was signed just six months before his death makes it even more noteworthy. The receipt (8.25 x 4 inches) displays three vertical fold lines, heavy creasing, and small tears along the edges and in the top center. In Poor to Fair condition overall. A fine example of this elusive signature and one of the keys to assembling a complete 1927 New York Yankees signature collection. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
