Official "Uniform Player's Contract" dated February 7, 1924, between Max Bishop and the Philadelphia American League Ball Club. Signed on the interior in blue and black fountain pen by "Max Frederick Bishop," "John D. Shibe" as vice president, and a pair of witnesses. Also signed on the front in black fountain pen by "B. B. Johnson" as American League President. The four-page agreement calls for Bishop to receive a salary of $6,000 for the 1924 season. This is Max Bishop's rookie contract. Bishop played six years of minor league ball before Connie Mack purchased his contract from the Baltimore Orioles of the International League at the end of the 1923 season. Over the next decade, Bishop anchored second base and handled leadoff duties for the Athletics, a stretch that saw the team win three American League pennants and two World Championships. Nicknamed “Camera Eye” for his elite ability to draw walks and get on base, Bishop finished his 12-year career with a .423 on-base percentage (15th on the all-time list). The contract (8.5 x 11 inches) displays two horizontal folds, along the ends of which there are a few small tears. A few pencil notations and light toning appear on the front. In Good condition. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
