Lot # 139: 1909 E254 Colgan's Chips "Square Proof" Ty Cobb SGC VG/EX 4

Graded VG/EX 4 by SGC. Extremely rare "Square Version" Colgan’s Chips card of legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb. This is one of Ty Cobb's most striking cards, from one of the era's most unusual and interesting sets. This unusual issue is obviously related to Colgan's Chips, and they do feature the same portraits as the ones found on E254 Colgan's Chips, but little else is known with certainty about them. We believe that these are a candy issue unto themselves, which was obviously produced in connection with the Colgan's set, but probably issued by a different company. This card is also noteworthy as it features the very same Carl Horner portrait as on his T206 card. Perfectly clean both front and back and with a crisp, flawless image. The blank reverse is entirely clean. Cobb, of course, is one of the key stars of the set. This is an outstanding example of one of Ty Cobb’s most elusive and unusual cards.
