Stunning mid-grade example of legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from the 1912 S81 Large Silk tobacco-premium issue. This is only the fourth example of Cobb from the S81 series that we have offered in the past 22 years. S81 silks could be obtained only by mail in exchange for 20 Helmar Tobacco gift coupons per silk. The redeemable coupons were inserted one coupon per pack, so it is not surprising that these premiums are extremely rare. Ty Cobb is the key Hall of Famer in the set, which includes just 25 subjects, and this is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Ty Cobb tobacco issues. The illustration of Cobb used in the S81 premium silk set is identical to that used in the T3 Turkey Red set and the rare L1 Leather set, all of which were part of this same promotion. This is a very attractive example! It has a flawless image area with extremely bold, bright colors, perfect registration, and a slight miscut along the top edge. Some very slight fraying at the top and bottom is present, as is almost always the case with large silks. Scattered wrinkling throughout, which account for the assigned grade of GOOD 2 from SGC. This is an extremely attractive and very rarely offered high-grade example of Ty Cobb from one of the rarest of all 1910-era tobacco-premium issues. Pedigreed from the "Texan Collection."
