Description

Graded FAIR 1.5 by SGC. Attractive T213 (Type 1) of Ty Cobb, the key card to this elusive and extremely rare tobacco set. This card was originally sold as Lot 123 in REA’s Fall 2015 auction. T213 Coupon Cigarettes are one of the most unusual, rarest, and overlooked of all tobacco-card issues. Very similar in design and borrowing the same images as the T206 set, the T213-1 set was issued exclusively in the Louisiana region. At a glance, T213-1s look exactly like T206s. However, when held in your hand, it is immediately apparent that they are printed on a noticeably thinner stock and lack the glossy surface finish characteristic of T206s. T213-1s also have a unique advertising design on their reverses. Approximately 68 different T213-1s are known, and the Red Background portrait is the only pose of Cobb known to exist. This well-centered example has excellent registration and honest corner wear. The important advertising reverse is boldly printed and displays a patch of paper loss along the "COUPON" lettering. This is a remarkable card that would be an extremely significant highlight in even the most advanced Ty Cobb, Hall of Fame, or prewar-card collection.
