Description

Attractive example of legendary Hall of Famer Honus Wagner from this extremely rare vignette real-photo postcard series issued in 1908. This is a very unusual and distinctive set featuring only Pittsburgh Pirates players, and it is believed that these cards were originally sold as souvenirs at Pittsburgh's Exhibition Field in 1908. Each postcard pictures the player in uniform and includes the player's last name, team, position, and year printed in white lettering within the body of the photo. This issue, designated "PC800," is distinguished by its irregular vignette photo borders and traditional divided postcard reverse. This is just the fourth example of this postcard we have ever offered. The offered postcard (3-3/8 x 5-3/8 inches) has a note scripted in pencil on the front, with even corner wear, light creasing, and minor soiling on the reverse. The reverse is addressed in black ink and has been mailed, with a postmark of "Jun 17 1908." There is also an ink stamp along the right edge of the reverse (likely the original owners name). Graded POOR 1 by SGC. This is a very appealing and rarely seen example that would be at home in any advanced postcard or Honus Wagner collection.
