Presented is a rarely offered complete eighteen-lid set of 1954 Dixie Lids plus five large variations. Dixie Lids are one of the most fascinating of all food issues in that they were designed as tops for the company's line of ice-cream products and featured well-known sports and movie stars on the inside as a further enticement to young consumers. Originally created in the 1930s, the idea was revived in the early 1950s. The 1954 set includes several variations that make assembling a complete master set very difficult. The lids can be found in three different sizes, with this collection offering the following quantities of each: eighteen "medium" (2-11/16 inches, the most commonly found size) and five "large" (3-3/16 inches). Lids can also be found with either right or left tabs, with this collection offering fourteen "left" tabs and nine "right" tabs. Nine lids still have the protective coating over the fronts. All twenty-three lids have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA as this set ranks first on the PSA set registry. PSA Grading Composite: MINT 9 (1 lid): Kluszewski/large. NM-MT 8 (3 lids): Ashburn, Gordon, and Roe. NM 7 (1 lid): Schoendienst/large. EX-MT+ 6.5 (1 lid): Hoeft/large. EX-MT 6 (6 lids): Courtney, Courtney/large, O'Connell, Slaughter/large, Woodling, and Zernial. EX+ 5.5 (1 lid): Jensen. EX 5 (8 lids): Irvin, Kiner, Kluszewski, Minoso, Parnell, Rosen, Schoendienst, and Slaughter. VG-EX 4 (2 lids): Hoeft and McDougald. This is a rarely seen complete set, plus five variations, of this scarce and extremely unusual issue. Total: 23 lids (set of 18 plus five variations).
