Silver-plated trophy presented to Thurman Munson for winning the 1967 Cape Cod League batting championship. Munson led the league with a .420 batting average as a member of the Chatham Athletics. The loving-cup trophy is mounted on a wooden base and features a figural batsman (missing its original bat) sitting on top. The wooden base includes a silver plaque housed in a fitted slot, bearing the engraved inscription "1967 Cape Cod League Batting Champion" and a Schaefer Beer logo. Officially founded in 1923, the Cape Cod Baseball League began as a local league for college and semiprofessional players, with teams based in Chatham, Falmouth, Hyannis, and Osterville. Over the next two decades, the league grew in popularity, with several other teams coming and going during that period. After disbanding for a few seasons during World War II, the league was revived in 1946, where it once again featured top local talent. In 1963, the league became what it is known as today: the top amateur summer league for college players. As of today, over 1,600 Cape Cod League players have graduated to the Major Leagues, including legends of the past such as Munson, Carlton Fisk, and Todd Helton, and stars of today highlighted by Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes, and Pete Alonso. The trophy (height: 16 inches) displays light wear and a few spots of tarnishing. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Munson's widow, Diana Munson. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
