Description

Baltimore Orioles road jersey worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Frank Robinson during the club's pennant-winning season of 1969. Graded A9 by MEARS. Photomatched by Resolution Photomatching to two undated images taken at Yankee Stadium as well as an additional likely photomatch to an undated image taken against the Athletics. The grey flannel jersey is lettered "Baltimore" across the front and features the number "20" on the left breast and reverse. "F. Robinson" is lettered on the reverse directly above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in orange on black felt. The jersey's size, set number, the year, and the uniform number ("44 Set 2 69 20") are chain-stitched in black upon a grey strip tag located in the collar. Both a "Spalding" label and a wash tag appear on the left front tail. Also located on the left front tail, directly adjacent to the "Spalding" label, is a "44" size tag. Robinson has signed the jersey in black marker on the right breast. The MLB 100th Anniversary patch has been removed from the left sleeve (the stitch outline of its former location is still visible); otherwise the jersey is original as issued, with no other alterations, and displays moderate wear, including a red-color mark on the back side of the right sleeve. Robinson batted .308 with 32 home runs and 100 RBI in 1969, leading the Orioles to their first of three consecutive American League Championships. One of the game's greatest sluggers, Robinson is the first player in history to win the MVP Award in each league and his lifetime total of 586 home runs ranks 10th on the all-time list. In 1975, Robinson broke one of baseball's long-standing color barriers by becoming the first African-American Major League manager in baseball history when he accepted that position with the Cleveland Indians. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982. Graded A9 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with one point deducted for the missing patch). Full LOA from MEARS (for the jersey only). Full LOA from James Spence/JSA (for the autograph only). Photomatch LOA from Resolution Photomatching.
