Description

Presented is a near-complete set of the extremely rare R147 "Tarzan and the Crystal Vault of Isis," consisting of forty-four different cards (out of fifty in the set). This set was issued by Schutter-Johnson Candy in one-cent packages of "Tarzan of the Apes Candy." R147 Tarzan cards have always been recognized as one of the rarest and most highly regarded sets of the 1930s. The near set is accompanied by nineteen cards from the V256 Canadian version of the set (with the English/French bilingual text on the back). The Canadian Tarzan cards are considered less valuable and desirable than the American version Schutter-Johnson Tarzan cards. The six cards that are missing from the R147 set (#5, 14, 15, 17, 21, and 46) are present amongst the nineteen Canadian cards (#2, 5, 7, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 26, 29, 36, 39, two 40, 46, 47, and 48). Condition is 19% Ex to Ex-Mt (mostly Ex), 68% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 13% lesser. The following eleven cards have been professionally graded by PSA (9) and SGC (2): #2 (VG-EX 4), 3 (EX 5), 11 (EX 5), 18 (VG-EX 4), 25 (SGC EX 60), 30 (SGC VG 40), 32 (VG-EX+ 4.5), 35 (VG-EX 4), 42 (VG-EX 4), 44 (VG-EX+ 4.5), and 47 (EX-MT 6 [MC]). The extreme scarcity of this set is probably due in part to the fact that Schutter-Johnson Candy was such a small company. However, Schutter-Johnson made every effort to impress by creating this exceptionally high quality card issue, which among all the sport and nonsport sets it ever produced is unquestionably its premier card issue. All cards are bright and colorful, and many of the lower-grade cards display better eye-appeal than suggested by their technically accurate assigned grades. Total: 63 cards (near set of 44 plus 19 V256 cards).
