Lot # 2896: 1938 R1 Goudey "Action Gum" Complete Set (96) Plus Wrapper

Presented is a complete 96-card set of R1 "Action Gum" plus an original wax wrapper. Issued by Goudey in the late 1930s, this series features colorful illustrations of battle scenes and military equipment along with detailed descriptions of the scene on the reverse. The reverse also heralded the set as "The Greatest Card Series Ever Produced" at the bottom of each card alongside advertising for the Goudey Gum Company. This set is incredibly popular among nonsport collectors due to its detailed and bright artwork and interesting subject matter. Nine cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (one by SGC): #7 (EX-MT 6), 19 (EX 5), 43 (EX-MT 6), 50 (SGC EX/NM 80), 51 (EX 5), 59 (EX 5), 65 (EX 5), 88 (EX 5), and 92 (EX-MT 6). The condition of the 87-card balance is 12% Ex or slightly better, 76% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 12% Fr to Gd (including one that measures small). Accompanying the set is a wax wrapper (blue background version) that grades Fair due to small tears and heavy creasing. This is a very attractive complete set of this classic 1930s nonsport issue.
