Description

Presented is a very impressive mid- to high-grade complete set of 1953 Topps. This set can be upgraded if desired, or kept exactly as is. A set in this grade is often considered as representing an unusually strong collecting value. There is always an extremely strong demand for classic vintage sets that are impressive yet still relatively affordable. Condition is 18% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt (approximately two-thirds Ex-Mt), 56% Vg-Ex to Ex, and 26% Gd to Vg (including a couple lesser, four with a slight trim, five with color added, and two altered). Twenty-four cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA (20) and SGC (4). Keys: #1 Robinson (VG 3), 10 Burgess SP (Vg-Ex), 27 Campanella (EX+ 5.5), 37 Mathews (PSA), 41 Slaughter (Vg), 43 McDougald SP (Vg), 54 Feller (SGC EX/NM 6), 61 Wynn SP (Vg-Ex+), 62 Irvin (95/5 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 66 Minoso (EX-MT 6), 76 Reese (Vg-Ex+), 77 Mize (PSA), 78 Schoendienst (color added, otherwise Vg-Ex), 81 Black SP (Vg-Ex+), 82 Mantle (GOOD+ 2.5), 86 Martin SP (EX-MT 6), 87 Lopat SP (Ex+), 104 Berra (SGC EX/NM 6), 114 Rizzuto (PSA), 119 Sain SP (trimmed, otherwise Vg-Ex+), 138 Kell (Ex-Mt), 147 Spahn (PSA), 149 D. DiMaggio (Vg+), 151 Wilhelm SP (Vg), 162 Kluszewski SP (Vg), 191 Kiner (Ex), 207 Ford (EX-MT 6), 220 Paige (Fr), 228 Newhouser (EX 5), 244 Mays (VG+ 3.5), 246 Face RC (PSA), 254 Roe (Ex-Mt), 258 Gilliam RC (Vg), 263 Podres RC SP (EX 5), 264 Woodling (Vg-Ex), 265 Jensen SP (EX-MT 6), 273 Haddix RC SP (SGC EX/NM 6), and 280 Bolling RC SP (EX-MT 6). Six additional PSA-graded cards: #24 (PSA), 174 (EX-MT 6), 226 (EX-MT 6), 257 (NM 7), 262 (NM 7), and 272 (SGC EX/NM 6). The flush-to-the-bottom-border design of the 1953 Topps set makes this issue particularly susceptible to edge and corner wear, and makes the assembly of high-grade sets all the more difficult. This is a very attractive mid-to high-grade set, far above average for this issue, with tremendous eye appeal across the board. The equivalent SMR value for the assigned grades (factoring in the three half grades at the lower whole-grade level) is $9,180. Total: 274 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
