Description

In the 1930s, Wheaties issued package-design baseball cards on the backs of its cereal boxes, which were intended to be hand-cut from the boxes by youngsters. These were difficult to collect back in the 1930s (imagine getting just one card per box of cereal), and are not a lot easier to collect today! Presented is a small but desirable collection of 38 cards featuring 27 Hall of Famers from eight different Wheaties sets issued between 1935 and 1938, highlighted by Carl Hubbell, Mel Ott, and Left Grove. All of the grades that follow are without respect to the neatness of the cut as the cards were intended to be cut by hand and can vary greatly. This collection consists of the following: 1) 1935 BB1 (8 cards): Cochrane/black hat, uniform with stripes (Vg, HOF), Collins (Gd+), two Frisch (both Vg, HOF), Klein (Gd, HOF), Martin (color added, otherwise Vg), Medwick (Pr-Fr due to back damage, HOF), and Simmons (Vg, HOF). 2) 1936 Series 3 (4 cards): Averill (Vg, HOF), Hubbell (Vg, HOF), Martin (Gd), and Vaughan (Fr-Gd due mostly to small tear, HOF). 3) 1938 Series 4 (10 cards): Two Gehringer (Vg and cut small, otherwise Pr, HOF), Hemsley (cut small, otherwise Pr-Fr), two Herman (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg and cut small, otherwise Pr, HOF), Medwick (cut small, otherwise Gd+, HOF), two Ott (pencil on reverse, otherwise Vg+ and cut small, otherwise Vg, HOF), Rowe (rubber-stamped reverse, otherwise Gd+), and Vosmik (cut small, otherwise Vg). 4) 1936 Series 5 (1 card): #9 Dickey (Vg, HOF). 5) 1937 Series 6 (1 card): #4 Gehringer (Pr-Fr due mostly to small tears, HOF). 6) 1937 Series 7 (5 cards): #29A Bonura (Pr due to back damage), 29D Moore (cut to inner orange border, otherwise Gd), 29E Lombardi (Gd, HOF), 29F Martin (cut inside the borders with rounded corners, otherwise Pr), and 29G Trosky (Fr). 7) 1937 Series 8 (5 cards): Appling (small pencil marks on reverse, otherwise Vg, HOF), two Gehringer (Fr and Pr [with rounded upper corners], HOF), Grove (altered tack holes, otherwise Pr, HOF), and Hubbell (Pr-Fr due to small spots of paper loss on reverse, HOF). 8) 1938 Series 10 (4 cards): #2 Travis (tape repair, otherwise PR), 5 Hubbell (cut to a die-cut design, otherwise Pr, HOF), 6 Johnson (Gd+), and 14 Gehringer (color added, otherwise Pr, HOF). This is an impressive grouping of cards, almost all of which present better than their technically accurate assigned grades, from these classic 1930s Wheaties sets. Total: 38 cards.
