Description

The 1950 Bowman set is often overlooked by collectors simply because it does not include a Mantle or Mays rookie, but this was a landmark set in its day, being the first postwar baseball issue to feature full-color artwork instead of photographs. We rarely have the opportunity to offer a complete set of 1950 Bowman and over the years have consistently found it to be among the most elusive sets of the era. Condition is 40% Ex to Ex-Mt (including 3% Nr/Mt), 51% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 9% lesser (mostly due to small marks on the reverse and including one altered). Eighteen cards have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA. Keys: #1 Parnell RC (85/15 T/B, otherwise Ex), 6 Feller (100/0 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), 8 Kell (Vg), 11 Rizzuto (EX-MT+ 6.5), 19 Spahn (VG-EX+ 4.5), 21 Reese (EX-MT 6), 22 Robinson (VG 3), 23 Newcombe RC (Vg), 28 Thomson (Vg), 32 Roberts (Vg-Ex), 33 Kiner (EX 5), 35 Slaughter (Vg-Ex), 37 Appling (Ex), 39 Doby (Ex), 40 Lemon (Vg+), 43 Doerr (Vg), 46 Berra (VG-EX 4), 58 Furillo (Vg-Ex), 59 Branca (Ex due mostly to centering), 62 Kluszewski (EX-MT 6), 71 Schoendienst (Vg+), 75 Campanella (EX 5), 77 Snider (marked reverse, otherwise Vg), 84 Ashburn (EX-MT 6), 94 Boudreau (Vg), 98 Williams (VG-EX 4), 112 Hodges (EX-MT 6), 129 Gordon (Ex), 139 Mize (Vg-Ex), 148 Wynn (Vg), 217 Stengel (Vg), 219 Bauer RC (NM 7), 220 Durocher (Vg-Ex), and 229 Frisch (partially erased pencil on front, otherwise Vg+). Six additional PSA-graded cards: NM 7 (2 cards): #60 and 252. EX-MT 6 (3 cards): #3, 31, and 36. EX 5 (1 card): #27. Very attractive, mostly mid-grade sets of classic issues from the 1950s such as this (let alone a hard-to-find 1950 Bowman set) always generate tremendous collector interest. This is the type of vintage set that, to many collectors, represents the very best value. Total: 252 cards. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
