Description

One-page handwritten letter, dated February 29, 1976 (leap year), signed by Hall of Famer James "Cool Papa" Bell. In his letter, scripted in blue fine-point marker on official “James (Cool Papa) Bell Baseball League” letterhead, Bell thanks this gentleman for support during his consideration for Baseball's Hall of Fame. In full: "Dear Mr. Hasnamner (sic), I truly appreciate all of the kindnesses you- and others did toward my entering into the Hall of Fame. Sorry you and others don't understand about- Mr. Buskirk, the contract I gave him was- four years ago. He was the first pearson (sic)- that wrote me consering (sic) my going into the Hall of Fame- at that time I had the things he asked for. I gave other people more than I gave him - you would have got what I had if you had asked for it at that time, now I have nothing that I know you want unless you ask for it. I will not send a letter from other players- If I have anything I think you can use I will send it to you. As I forth said, thanking you and others the effort trying to help getting me into the Hall of Fame. They research and found I was qualified after giving 43 points to help the young players to get a tryout with the Major Leagues, these copys (sic) will tell the story. The only thing I got out of it was the honor and that do not put any bread on my table. Best of luck. Sincerely. James "Cool Papa" Bell [signed]. Both the text and Bell's signature are boldly scripted. The letter (8-1/2 x 11 inches) displays three horizontal folds and a return address label affixed at the top. In Very Good condition overall.
