1909 was a banner year for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Not only did the club christen its new stadium, Forbes Field, but it also captured the first World Championship in franchise history. Just prior to the club's 1909 World Series appearance, the Pittsburg Press commemorated the club's pennant-winning season by issuing this colorful supplement featuring portrait images of 25 team members. Included here are Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke, Vic Willis, Deacon Phillippe, Tommy Leach, Babe Adams, Howie Camnitz, and team owner Barney Dreyfuss. As noted in the credits, all of the portrait images are the work of famed Boston photographer Carl Horner. Ideally, the Wagner portrait image on this piece is the same one that was used for his legendary T206 tobacco card issued that same year. The multicolored caption reads "Pennant Winners/Pittsburg BB Club/National League/1909." All of the portraits feature preprinted numbers on them, with the numbers corresponding to an identification panel along the base. The supplement (19.75 x 11.75 inches, visible dimensions) displays a few tears, some of which appear to have been repaired, the most noticeable of which affect the portrait of Robert Byrne in the upper right corner. A few handwritten player identifications are evident in the lower right corner for Wilson, Abbaticchio, and Hyatt. In Fair to Good condition overall. It should be noted that this fragile supplement is rarely found without serious flaws, including major tears, staining, and toning. This example remains a highly attractive display piece commemorating what was perhaps the most memorable season in Pirates history. Matted to total dimensions of 25.75 x 18 inches. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
