Description

Original news photo of Lou Gehrig with his arm around Babe Dahlgren, perched atop the steps of the dugout at Briggs Stadium in Detroit on May 2, 1939. This photo was snapped after Gehrig took himself out of the lineup that day, ending his then-record streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games. Dahlgren, who replaced Gehrig in the lineup, blasted a home run as the Yankees overwhelmed the Tigers 22-2. Unbeknownst to Gehrig at the time, he was suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a fatal neurological disease that would take his life just two years later. Encapsulated and certified as an original Type I photograph by PSA/DNA. The reverse bears the original paper news caption, which is fittingly titled "Passing The Torch." The photo (7 x 9 inches) displays scattered creasing and is in Very Good condition overall.
