Description

Pittsburgh Pirates home uniform (jersey and pants) worn by outfielder Vince DiMaggio during the 1944 season. The white flannel zipper-front jersey is lettered "Pirates" across the front and features the number 9 on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on blue felt. A "Goldsmith" label is located in the collar. The player's name, size, set number, and year ("DiMaggio 44 1 '44") are chain-stitched in red upon the left-front tail. The jersey is original as issued (zipper is functional but is missing the slide fastening tong), with no alterations. Moderate wear is evident throughout. The matching white flannel pants feature the player's name, size, set number, and year ("V. DiMaggio 36 1 '44") chain-stitched in red on the waistband. The number "9" is chain-stitched in red upon a square white-felt tag embroidered on the interior, just below the button hole. The pants display moderate wear. A two-time All-Star (1943 and 1944), Vince played 10 seasons with five different teams, his longest tenure with Pittsburgh. Graded A9.5 by MEARS (base grade of 10, with a half-point deducted for the missing zipper tong). Please note: The MEARS grade is for the jersey only. MEARS does not grade pants. Total: 2 items (jersey and pants). Full LOA from MEARS.
